DVC Reservation Change Reportedly Ends Walking
Published September 4, 2026 · Updated September 30, 2026
Disney Vacation Club has updated the rules governing how members modify confirmed reservations, in a change reported on Thursday, September 3, 2026 that appears to end the practice known as “walking the reservation” at Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts. Under the new language, changes to travel dates and room types can only be made once the original check-out date falls within 11 months of the modification request.
As of Friday, September 4, 2026, the policy text is posted but the booking system itself has reportedly not changed yet. Disney Vacation Club’s member site carries a News & Alerts entry pointing to a Disney Stays page on modifying and cancelling reservations, which states that updates to the booking system are coming soon.
Walking a reservation is the tactic of booking a date at the 11-month home resort window and then repeatedly nudging it forward day by day, effectively holding a rolling claim on a hard-to-get room. Locking modifications until the original check-out date is inside 11 months removes the mechanism that made it work.
Guest information changes and outright cancellations are still permitted under the new rule, according to the posted language.
The change follows earlier steps aimed at commercial point renters — new terms and a personal-use certification introduced last summer, and a Commercial Use Policy published in March 2026 that defined commercial use and added an enforcement mechanism.
What we know
- Date and room type changes on a confirmed reservation are allowed only when the original check-out date is within 11 months of the modification request.
- Guest information updates and cancellations remain available.
- The Disney Vacation Club member site added a News & Alerts item titled “Upcoming Updates to Reservation Modifications” pointing to a Disney Stays page.
- That page says booking system updates are “coming soon” — the system reportedly has not been changed yet.
- The rule change was reported on Thursday, September 3, 2026; it follows a Commercial Use Policy published in March 2026.
What’s not confirmed
This comes from a single report rather than an official Disney announcement, and Disney has not issued a public statement framing the change or naming “walking” as the target. No effective date for the booking system update has been announced, and it has not been stated whether reservations already walked forward will be affected or grandfathered. Whether the rule applies identically to home resort and non-home-resort bookings has also not been spelled out.
What it means for your trip
If you own points and were counting on walking into a Boardwalk standard view or a Bay Lake Tower theme park view, plan on booking the exact dates you want at 8:00 AM Eastern on your 11-month day instead. That makes the first hour of your home resort window the whole game — set a calendar alert and know your second and third choice room categories before you log in.
If you rent points, expect the highest-demand categories to be handed out more by who books first than by who works the system hardest, which is modestly good news for regular members.
Cash-side planners are unaffected: this touches DVC member reservations, not standard Disney resort bookings, tickets, dining, or Lightning Lane. And if a room you want is gone, cancellations still release inventory — waitlist it and keep checking.
