Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream of Extinction
Dinosaur Gertie’s is Echo Lake’s giant neon-green dinosaur — the one slumped at the water’s edge “breathing” smoke and selling ice cream out of her belly. She’s pure 1930s-Hollywood-roadside kitsch, a nod to Gertie the Dinosaur (one of animation’s earliest cartoon stars), and she’s been a Studios landmark since the park’s early days. This is not a sit-down anything: it’s a walk-up window for soft-serve cups, waffle cones, and Mickey’s Premium Ice Cream Bars, eaten standing on the lakefront with no table service and no fuss.
The real catch is that Gertie keeps her own hours. She does not run on a regular daily schedule and is frequently shuttered even on busy days, so treating her as a guaranteed stop is a setup for disappointment. When she IS open, though, the move is the hand-dipped chocolate Mickey bar rolled in crushed peanuts — a sturdier, melt-resistant treat that holds up far better than a soft-serve cup in Florida heat, which is exactly what you want while you’re killing time before a show.
Worth it? As a destination, no — the menu is small and the same Mickey bars turn up all over the park. As a moment, yes: an ice cream from inside a smoking dinosaur, eaten beside Echo Lake, is a very SupaPark kind of small win. Just don’t build your afternoon around her being open.
This is a photo-op snack stand, not a dining decision — and that’s fine. Go for the novelty of buying ice cream out of a dinosaur’s gut, grab a hand-dipped bar, and keep moving. It’s for the kid (or kid-at-heart) who’ll think a smoking neon dino is the best thing in Echo Lake, and for anyone who wants a quick cool-down without committing to a real food stop. Don’t go out of your way; let her catch you in passing.
