Magic Kingdom Tests Sightlines for Villains and Cars Lands
Published September 5, 2026 · Updated October 14, 2026
According to reports on Saturday, September 5, Walt Disney Imagineers conducted sightline tests at Magic Kingdom for the massive expansion adding Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land. The early-morning balloon tests are helping designers assess how the height of the new attractions will impact visual sightlines across the rest of the park.
As of Saturday, September 5, construction barriers are blocking the main Frontierland pathway between the Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The area behind these walls is currently being cleared to make way for the two new themed areas.
The expansion will introduce distinct new spaces. Piston Peak National Park will feature two attractions based on the Cars franchise: Cars Ridge Run Rally, a coaster simulating a rugged off-road drive, and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along, a family-focused flat ride. Villains Land will host a roller coaster themed to Maleficent’s fortress and a dark ride hosted by the Magic Mirror that showcases famous antagonists such as Scar, Ursula, Jafar, Doctor Facilier, and Cruella De Vil.
During the recent balloon tests, Imagineers tethered large balloons at the intended heights of these new structures to determine if the landmarks will be visible from other themed areas, allowing them to adjust designs if necessary to preserve the park’s immersive storytelling.
What we know
- Piston Peak National Park (Magic Kingdom) — will include two attractions based on the Cars franchise: an off-road thrill ride called Cars Ridge Run Rally and a family spinning attraction named Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along.
- Villains Land (Magic Kingdom) — will feature a Maleficent-themed roller coaster and a Magic Mirror dark ride showcasing classic animated antagonists.
- Frontierland construction walls (Magic Kingdom) — are currently blocking the primary walkway between the Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
- Sightline testing — Imagineers are using tethered balloons at the construction site to evaluate how the height of the new structures will look from other areas of the park.
What’s not confirmed
Disney has not confirmed an opening timeline for Piston Peak National Park or Villains Land, nor have they announced specific height dimensions or height requirements for the four new attractions.
What it means for your trip
- Expect tight walkways. With construction walls lining the path between Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, traffic in Frontierland will bottleneck. Budget extra walking time, especially right after parades.
- Surrounding rides operate normally. While the construction zone is massive, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Haunted Mansion remain open.
- Bundle your rides. Instead of making multiple trips back and forth across the construction zone, try to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Haunted Mansion in one sweep to avoid navigating the narrowed paths more than necessary.
