Magic Kingdom Loses Its Best Rain Hideout: Carousel of Progress Closes Next Week

In exactly one week, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is shutting its doors for a top-to-bottom transformation.

While it isn’t a headlining coaster, this classic attraction has quietly served as a strategic secret weapon for Walt Disney World planners. It’s a massive people-eater, an iconic piece of history, and—crucially—one of the best places in Magic Kingdom to sit in air conditioning for 21 uninterrupted minutes.

Its closure removes a major safety valve from Tomorrowland. Here is what you need to know and how to adjust your park day.

The New Rain and AC Strategy

Florida weather is notoriously unpredictable. An unavoidable issue you must prepare for is rain—it will mess up your Disney World day if you aren’t ready. When storms roll in, outdoor rides shut down, and thousands of guests suddenly scramble for cover.

Historically, the Carousel of Progress was the ultimate rain hideout. It rarely had a wait, you got to sit down, and it kept you dry. With it gone, you need a backup plan for the afternoon heat and daily downpours.

Your smartest alternative in Tomorrowland is Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor. It holds a large crowd, the wait is usually short, and the AC is blasting. The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover is another great option since it is fully covered, but be warned: the PeopleMover standby line spikes immediately when it starts raining because everyone else has the exact same idea.

Managing Tomorrowland Crowds

Even though Carousel of Progress doesn’t command massive wait times, it constantly absorbs hundreds of guests. With those doors closed, those people will be pushed out into the walkways and standby lines of other Tomorrowland attractions.

Because of this, the move is to knock out Tomorrowland early. Getting up early for rope drop is critical—wait times are drastically lower in the first hour of the day. If you can ride Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin before 10:00 AM, you will avoid the afternoon bottleneck entirely.

Lightning Lane Adjustments

If you are using Lightning Lane Multi Pass, the Carousel’s closure means one less filler attraction to absorb the crowds.

As a reminder, you buy Multi Pass and book your initial Lightning Lane selections in advance (7 days out for Disney hotel guests, 3 days for off-site). Once you redeem your first ride, you can book your next one. A highly effective tactic is stacking your Lightning Lanes for the afternoon—especially if you want to take a midday hotel break. Just keep the 120-minute rule in mind (you can book a new selection two hours after the park opens or two hours after your last booking, whichever comes first).
