Here’s the short version: Soarin’ Around the World isn’t a roller coaster, but that doesn’t automatically mean every kid will love it. The ride simulates flight by hoisting you into the air in an open-air theater seat, dangling your feet in front of an immense 80-foot screen.

For kids who clear the 40-inch height requirement, it usually lands as a breathtaking highlight of the day. But for a child who is genuinely terrified of heights or sensory-heavy dark rooms, it can be overwhelming. Before you dedicate park time to it, here is how to know if your kid is ready—plus the insider seating hack you need to know.

The Free Test to Do Before You Leave Home

The trap many planners fall into is deciding based solely on a child’s age or height. Instead, go by temperament. The single most useful thing you can do costs nothing and happens weeks before your trip.

Pull up an on-ride video of Soarin’ at home and watch your kid watch it. Explain that the seats lift up off the ground. A child who watches the sweeping landscapes and says “I want to do that” is ready. A child who shrinks away or covers their eyes just answered the question for you—with zero pressure and zero wasted park time. A two-minute video at the kitchen table beats guessing in the standby line.

Heights, Motion, and What the Ride Actually Feels Like

Soarin’ is gentle. There are no sudden drops, inversions, or high-speed launches. The motion is smooth, swaying to match the visuals on the screen. However, you are lifted up to 40 feet in the air (depending on your row), and the theater is dark. If your child is easily spooked by a fear of heights or immersive screens, this is the hurdle.

If they are nervous but willing, hold their hand and remind them it’s just a movie. But if they are a hard “no” on heights, don’t force it.

How to Handle a Split Group (Rider Switch)

If you have a child who doesn’t meet the 40-inch height requirement—or one who clears the height but is too scared to ride—you do not have to skip it. Use Rider Switch.

One adult waits outside with the non-rider while the other adult rides. Then, you swap without the second adult having to wait in the full standby queue. At EPCOT, while the first adult rides Soarin’ inside The Land pavilion, the waiting adult can take the non-rider on Living with the Land. It’s a slow, gentle boat ride through the working greenhouses in the exact same building. It almost always has a short wait, it’s fully indoors and air-conditioned, and it’s perfectly safe for any age or height.

The “B1” Insider Seating Hack

If your group is ready to fly, there is one trick to getting the absolute best experience. Because the screen is curved, seats on the far edges or lower rows will see curved, distorted images (like a bent Eiffel Tower) or dangling feet from the row above them.

When you reach the front of the line and the Cast Member begins assigning you to a concourse and a row, politely ask to wait for Concourse B, Row 1.

This puts you dead center and at the very top. You will have no distorted screens and no dangling feet blocking your view. You might have to wait one extra ride cycle (about five minutes) for it to open up, but it is entirely worth it for the pristine view.

The Smart Move for Your EPCOT Day

Soarin’ is a high-priority ride, but you can usually ride it anytime. Unlike the stress of securing a Lightning Lane Single Pass for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Soarin’ is a Lightning Lane Multi Pass option and often sees moderate standby waits in the afternoon.

If you don’t grab a Lightning Lane, the standby line is fully indoors and air-conditioned, making it a great midday escape from the Florida heat.
