Taking Kids on EPCOT's Soarin': The Honest Guide for Parents

Most young kids who meet the 40-inch height requirement handle Soarin’ Around the World just fine. It is smooth, scenic, and widely considered a family-friendly headliner. But “family-friendly” doesn’t mean “fear-free.”

Because the attraction relies on lifting your seats up to 40 feet in the air inside a darkened theater, kids with a severe fear of heights or the dark might panic before the ride even really begins.

Here is exactly what to expect, how to minimize the scare factor, and how to fit it into your EPCOT strategy without wasting your morning.

The Intimidation Factor: Heights and the Dark

The ride simulates a hang-gliding flight over global landmarks. Once you buckle your seatbelt (smaller kids have an extra center loop strap for security), the lights go out, the canopy above you descends, and your entire row is lifted forward and upward into a massive IMAX-style dome.

If a child is going to get scared, it usually happens right here during the lift. Once you are in position, the ride is simply a gentle swaying motion coordinated with the video on the screen, complete with pumped-in scents and wind.

The insider move: If your child is nervous about heights, kindly ask the Cast Member assigning seats to put you in Row 3 (the back row). When the ride lifts into place, Row 3 stays the lowest to the ground. The trade-off is that you will see the feet of the guests in the rows above you dangling at the top of your screen, but for an anxious kid, it is a worthwhile compromise.

What About Motion Sickness?

Many guests swear they will never ride EPCOT’s Mission: SPACE or Animal Kingdom’s Avatar Flight of Passage again because those attractions completely wreck their stomachs.

Soarin’ is a different story. While it is a screen-based simulator, the physical movement is incredibly fluid and slow. It rarely causes the intense nausea associated with other Disney simulators. If your child can handle riding in a car, they are usually in the clear here.

The Strategy: Lightning Lane and Rope Drop

Soarin’ is a Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction. It is a solid use of a Multi Pass selection, but it doesn’t sell out nearly as fast as Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure or Frozen Ever After.

Many families choose to “rope drop” Soarin’—rushing straight to The Land pavilion the minute the park opens. While this works to beat the crowds, here is what I’d actually do if you have young kids in tow:

If half your party isn’t riding, don’t waste the most valuable, low-crowd hour of the day standing near the stroller parking. Use Rider Switch so the adults can take turns riding without waiting in the standby line twice.

Alternatively, skip the morning Soarin’ rush entirely. While the masses are sprinting to Test Track and Soarin’, take advantage of a lesser-known EPCOT morning hack. Head back to the France pavilion. While most of the World Showcase is asleep, Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie opens at 9:00 AM. You can grab a phenomenal in-house pastry and a quiet cup of coffee with zero stress. Once the area wakes up, let the kids enjoy the Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along (which has zero height requirement) while you book a Lightning Lane for Soarin’ later in the day.

You can also use the end-of-night hack: jump into the Soarin’ standby queue 15 to 20 minutes before EPCOT closes. The posted wait time is usually wildly inflated by that point, and you will often walk right on. Just know that this is a risk—if the ride breaks down at the end of the night, you miss out entirely.
