Overview
The Frontierland station of the Walt Disney World Railroad is the Magic Kingdom train stop next to the Frontierland/Liberty Square side of the park. Historically, the steam trains ran a full loop around Magic Kingdom with stops at Main Street, U.S.A., Frontierland and Fantasyland. The Frontierland station closed on July 7, 2025, the day after the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat shut down for good. That stretch of track runs through the construction zone for the new Cars-themed expansion and the planned Villains land. Disney hasn’t confirmed when, or in what form, this stop will come back, so check Disney’s current listing before you plan around it.
Is it worth it?
For now, you can’t use this stop, so don’t build any part of your day around it. Disney said that while Frontierland station is closed, the railroad would run as a temporary shuttle between Main Street, U.S.A. and Fantasyland instead of making the full loop. That means you can’t use the train as a shortcut from Frontierland to the other side of the park.
Who still gets something out of the railroad: train fans, families with little kids who love steam engines, and anyone who wants to sit down for a while. The Main Street–Fantasyland run still works as a scenic way to get from the front of the park to the back without walking.
The catch: you lose the full grand-circle experience, and the Frontierland view that made the old loop special is gone because of construction. If you’re in Frontierland and need to get to Fantasyland or Main Street, walking will almost always be faster. Don’t spend Lightning Lane planning on this one either, since the railroad has never been a Lightning Lane attraction.
Insider tips
- Disney turned some seats around for shuttle mode. Because the train now runs back and forth instead of looping, Disney reversed some of the seating so guests can face forward in either direction. If you want to see where you’re going, pick a forward-facing bench when you board. If you’d rather watch the scenery pull away behind you, take a backward-facing one.
- Check before you walk over. Frontierland station’s closure was tied to a long construction project, and Disney hasn’t announced when it will reopen. SupaPark’s live status shows whether the railroad is running and how it’s operating that day. Disney’s current listing is still the final word on which stations are open.
- Use the train for a long Main Street-to-Fantasyland hop. If you’re at the front of the park and heading to the back of Fantasyland (the Storybook Circus side), the shuttle can save little legs a long walk. It’s best as a mid-day reset, not a rope-drop move.
- Don’t use it as a shortcut out of Frontierland. With the Frontierland stop closed, guests coming off Big Thunder Mountain Railroad or Tiana’s Bayou Adventure should walk to their next stop.
- Go when the park is hot and busy. Late morning through mid-afternoon is when a seated, shaded break is worth the most. It’s also when walking through the crowds on Main Street is the slowest.
- No Lightning Lane, no single rider line. It’s a standby-only experience. Save your Multi Pass selections and Single Pass budget for rides that actually have long lines.
Who can ride
- Height: no height requirement. Everyone in the family can ride together, so you won’t need Rider Switch.
- Intensity: very gentle, with no drops, spins or speed. It’s a slow, scenic steam-train ride.
- Motion sickness: low risk. In shuttle mode you may ride backward for part of the trip, so if facing backward bothers you, choose a forward-facing seat when you board.
- Young kids: a great pick for toddlers and preschoolers. The loud steam whistle can startle very small children, so have ear protection or a reassuring hug ready.
- Strollers: plan to park your stroller rather than bring it aboard, and check Disney’s current guidance at the station.
