Animal Kingdom Overhauls Its Rope Drop Procedure
Published September 7, 2026 · Updated October 19, 2026
Disney’s Animal Kingdom has changed how it handles morning rope drop, ending the practice of holding non-Early Entry guests in a cramped section of the Oasis, according to reports published Monday, September 7, 2026. Under the new procedure, everyone who taps through the turnstiles — on-site or off-site — is allowed down both Oasis pathways onto Discovery Island before official park opening, with Early Theme Park Entry verification now happening at multiple checkpoints on Discovery Island instead of near Guest Services.
As of Monday, September 7, 2026, reports describe guests being let onto Discovery Island roughly 30 to 45 minutes before the park’s official opening time. The change reportedly brings Animal Kingdom in line with morning procedures already adjusted at EPCOT, Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Previously, the split happened immediately past the turnstiles: Early Entry–eligible guests had their MagicBands or tickets verified up front and walked the left Oasis path to Discovery Island, while everyone else was funneled into a narrow holding zone on the right side and left waiting for regular opening.
Reports also say PhotoPass photographers are now working Discovery Island before official opening, so guests waiting for regular rope drop can get Tree of Life photos out of the way.
What we know
- Disney’s Animal Kingdom — the Oasis holding area for non-Early Entry guests has reportedly been eliminated.
- All guests — admitted through both Oasis pathways onto Discovery Island before official park opening, reportedly 30 to 45 minutes ahead.
- Early Theme Park Entry — verification moved from near Guest Services to multiple checkpoints on Discovery Island, each feeding a different part of the park.
- PhotoPass — photographers deployed on Discovery Island ahead of official opening.
- Early Theme Park Entry itself — unchanged as a 30-minute perk for guests at Disney World Resort hotels and select other eligible hotels.
What’s not confirmed
Disney has not published an official statement on the new Animal Kingdom rope drop procedure. The reporting comes from a single source, and there is no announced start date, no word on whether the setup is permanent or a test, and no confirmation that the pre-opening admission window will consistently be 30 to 45 minutes — that timing appears to be an observation, not a stated policy.
What it means for your trip
If you have Early Entry, the head start is still yours, but the clean walk to it is gone — build in extra minutes to work through a crowd on Discovery Island and get to the right checkpoint. Pick your checkpoint by your first ride, not by habit: the Africa side for Kilimanjaro Safaris, the Pandora side for Avatar Flight of Passage.
If you’re off-site, this is a real upgrade. Arriving early now buys you shade, space and a position at a checkpoint instead of a squeeze in a corridor, which narrows the gap on the 8:00 a.m. rope drop for whichever headliner you want first.
Either way, treat morning positioning as a bet, not a guarantee. Avatar Flight of Passage is a Lightning Lane Single Pass ride, so if the walk-up wait balloons, buying in is the fallback — and SupaPark’s wait-drop alerts will ping you when Safaris or Flight of Passage dips later in the day, which is often the cheaper fix than fighting the crowd twice.
