First pick: Na’vi River Journey (yes, really)

The smartest opening selection at Animal Kingdom is usually Na’vi River Journey, not one of the mountains. It’s a slow, gentle boat ride through Pandora — nobody’s adrenaline highlight — but it runs on painfully low capacity, so the standby line balloons fast and stays ugly for most of the day. It’s a Multi Pass attraction, and it’s exactly the kind of ride where a Lightning Lane saves you the most raw minutes per slot. Low thrill, high wait: that’s the profile you want your first pick to have.

The rookie move is burning your opening selection on Expedition Everest because it feels like the big one. The veteran move is grabbing Na’vi River Journey first, because Everest has better free options (more on that in a second).

Second pick: Kilimanjaro Safaris — but book it for the morning

Kilimanjaro Safaris is your other strong Multi Pass first pick, and here timing does double duty. The ride draws long lines, so a Lightning Lane helps — but morning is also when the animals are most active, before the Florida heat sends them into the shade for a midday siesta. Book your safari Lightning Lane for a morning window and you get the shorter wait and the better ride. That’s the rare pick where the strategic move and the experience move are the same move.

If you’re deciding between Na’vi and the Safari for your very first slot, take whichever your group cares about more and grab the other as your first refill.

The one to skip: don’t waste a slot on Expedition Everest

Expedition Everest is a Multi Pass ride, so it comes bundled if you buy the pass — but the sharp play is to ride the Yeti without spending a Lightning Lane on it. Everest has a single rider line, and if your group is willing to split up, it can cut a long posted wait down to a fraction. Rope drop handles it too — the first 15–30 minutes after open are some of the shortest waits of the day for the mountain. Save your Multi Pass slots for the rides with no good free workaround, and let your legs (or the single rider line) handle Everest.

DINOSAUR and Kali River Rapids round out the Multi Pass pool. Both are worth a refill later in the day rather than a precious opening pick — and remember Kali will get you soaked, so slot it for the hottest part of the afternoon when you want to be wet, not first thing in the morning.

How Multi Pass actually works here — so you book at the right moment

Lightning Lane Multi Pass is purchased per day, and you pick your attractions in advance — this isn’t a wake-up-at-7-AM-day-of scramble. Disney resort and on-site guests can start making selections up to 7 days before arrival for the whole trip; off-site guests get a 3-day window. Either way, the booking window opens at 7:00 AM Eastern on your eligible day. Don’t confuse that 7:00 AM Multi Pass timing with dining. Advance Dining Reservations open 60 days out at 6:00 AM Eastern — a totally separate clock. If you’re chasing a hard-to-get table like Tiffins or Tusker House on top of your ride plan, keep those two mornings straight.

Rope drop is still the cheapest Lightning Lane there is

Flight of Passage sits outside Multi Pass, but you have two ways to handle it without overpaying for the Single Pass. First, rope drop it — and mean it. “Rope drop” means being at the gate before posted open, not strolling in at open. Disney routinely scans guests through security and into holding areas early, and if you’re an on-site guest, Early Theme Park Entry gets you in 30 minutes ahead of everyone else. Point that half hour straight at Pandora and go — it’s your best free shot at Flight of Passage all day.

Second, ride it late. Standby craters as day guests leave, and it drops dramatically during Extended Evening Hours if you’re a Deluxe or Club-level resort guest on a night Animal Kingdom hosts them. Those same 120-minute midday lines can fall toward walk-on after dark. If you’re already paying for that perk, save Flight of Passage for the late window and ride it for free instead of buying the Single Pass.
