Magic Kingdom Dec 5–6: Light Crowds, With a Sunday Catch
Published October 29, 2026
Here’s the short version: Magic Kingdom is the lightest park on SupaPark’s forecast for the weekend of Saturday, Dec 5 and Sunday, Dec 6, 2026, averaging 5.5/10. But Sunday comes with a big catch. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party runs on Dec 6, so the park closes early to regular day guests. Sunday’s lower crowds come with fewer hours.
The one number that should shape your plan is the gap between early morning and midday. SupaPark’s wait data shows Jungle Cruise at a median 5 minutes at 8 AM and 40 minutes at 12 PM. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad runs 5 minutes at 8 AM and 38 minutes at 1 PM. That data covers Sep 30–Oct 28. It shows the recent daily pattern, not a measurement of December, but the shape tends to hold: the first hour is worth more than any other hour of the day.
How the four parks stack up this weekend
SupaPark’s crowd forecast for Dec 5–6, as of Oct 29:
- EPCOT: 8.0/10 average, peaking at 9/10 on Dec 6. It’s the busiest park of the weekend.
- Hollywood Studios: 7.0/10 average, peaking at 8/10 on Dec 6.
- Animal Kingdom: 6.0/10 average, peaking at 7/10 on Dec 6.
- Magic Kingdom: 5.5/10 average, peaking at 6/10 on Dec 6. It’s the lightest park.
Sunday is busier than Saturday everywhere. If your trip is flexible, avoid EPCOT on Sunday. A 9/10 there means long waits on Test Track and Frozen Ever After for most of the day. Recently, Test Track has run a median 30 minutes at 8 AM and 75 minutes at 3 PM. Frozen Ever After has run 20 minutes at 8 AM and 65 minutes at 1 PM.
Magic Kingdom’s lighter rating on Sunday likely reflects the party closing it early, at least in part. A 6/10 crowd packed into fewer day-guest hours can feel busier than the score suggests.
Saturday, Dec 5: do your full Magic Kingdom day here
If you only get one full Magic Kingdom day this weekend, make it Saturday. It’s the lighter day, and you keep the evening. That matters, because several of Magic Kingdom’s best low-wait tricks happen at night:
- Dumbo the Flying Elephant in the last 45 minutes before close. Families with strollers head for the exits and Storybook Circus empties out. A 35-minute midday wait for a 90-second ride is one of the worst trades in the park. At closing time it’s usually close to free.
- Rides during the nighttime show, when it’s running. A big show pulls thousands of people to Main Street and the hub, and waits in the rest of the park drop. Fantasyland flat rides like Mad Tea Party and Dumbo benefit most.
- The 8 PM dip. SupaPark’s wait data shows Magic Kingdom’s top-five rides at a median 30 minutes at 8 PM, compared with 43 minutes at 5 PM. Evening is when the park gives time back.
You can’t use any of these on Sunday. Rides that are easy to fix with good timing, like Dumbo and the teacups, belong on Saturday night.
Sunday, Dec 6: make it a morning, then decide
On party day, focus everything on the morning. Magic Kingdom’s top-five median recently started at 25 minutes at 8 AM and climbed to 45 minutes at 1 PM. On a day with a shortened schedule for regular guests, morning is the time you can count on.
The Sunday plan:
- Arrive early. On-site guests get Early Theme Park Entry. Fantasyland’s flat rides are usually nearly empty for the first 30 minutes, while the crowd rushes to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Peter Pan’s Flight.
- Ride Jungle Cruise and Big Thunder early. At 5-minute medians around 8 AM, they don’t need Lightning Lane in the morning.
- Then choose. You can stay for the party if you bought a separate party ticket, or leave before day guests are cleared out. Check the posted park hours in My Disney Experience for the exact cutoff, because party nights change the schedule.
If you have Park Hopper and want an afternoon somewhere else, Animal Kingdom is the best option. Its recent pattern is unusual: Kilimanjaro Safaris ran a median 10 minutes at 3 PM, compared with 55 minutes at 10 AM, and the park’s top-five median dropped to 15 minutes by 5 PM. A late-day safari fits a party-day schedule well. Skip hopping to EPCOT. Sunday is its peak day.
Lightning Lane: spend it on midday, not the morning
With morning waits this short, the classic mistake is booking your first Lightning Lane Multi Pass selections for 9 AM. Book your return times for 11 AM through about 2 PM, when SupaPark’s data shows Magic Kingdom’s waits at their highest (a median 45 minutes at 1 PM).
The timing rules: Disney resort guests can book Multi Pass selections 7 days before arrival, and off-site guests 3 days before. Both windows open at 7:00 AM Eastern in My Disney Experience. After you use a selection, or its return window passes, you can add the next one. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and TRON Lightcycle / Run are sold separately as Lightning Lane Single Pass. If you’re only at Magic Kingdom on Sunday morning, think carefully about whether a full day’s Multi Pass is worth it for a half day.
December cold changes how you ride
Orlando in December can turn cool, especially after dark, and plenty of visitors come underdressed. Two practical points:
- Plan Tiana’s Bayou Adventure for the warmest part of the day. Getting soaked on a 50-foot drop feels fine in July. At 8 PM in December, you’ll be walking around wet and cold for hours. Ride it in early afternoon, and bring a hooded layer or poncho.
- Pack spare pants and a sweatshirt in your park bag. If you end up wet after a water ride on a chilly night, a dry layer can save the evening.
Also, ride the teacups before you eat, not after. Fantasyland is full of snacks, and a funnel cake followed by spinning is a mistake many people make once.
Dining: the 60-day window is already open
Advance Dining Reservations open 60 days ahead at 6:00 AM Eastern, so the window for this weekend has already opened. If the table you wanted is booked, keep watching for cancellations. Plans shift as December trips firm up. SupaPark’s Drop Watch alerts you when a table opens up, then you book it in My Disney Experience. Free members get Drop Watch alerts by email, and Silver adds instant push alerts. Live waits and the crowd calendar are free at supapark.com, and SupaPark is a free app on iPhone and Android.
One more tip: don’t leave a sit-down meal carrying an open drink if you’re going straight to a Lightning Lane return. Open drinks aren’t allowed on attractions.
The one thing to remember
Plan the two days differently. Saturday, Dec 5 is your full Magic Kingdom day, with evening rides, Dumbo at close, and lines that drop during the show. Sunday, Dec 6 is a morning-only Magic Kingdom day because of the party, with an Animal Kingdom afternoon if you can park-hop. Avoid EPCOT on Sunday.
