Walt Disney World Railroad Set for October Refurbishment

Disney is reportedly closing the Walt Disney World Railroad for refurbishment beginning Monday, September 28, at Magic Kingdom. The attraction is currently scheduled to remain closed through October 29 and reopen October 30.

As of Sunday, September 27, reports say September 27 is the final scheduled operating day before the shutdown begins. The closure covers essentially the full month of October, so guests visiting Magic Kingdom during that stretch should not plan on using the train.

According to reports, Disney has characterized the downtime as a routine refurbishment. The company has not announced a major overhaul for the Walt Disney World Railroad.

The closure also comes while the railroad is already operating in a modified format because of construction around Frontierland. Since July 7, 2025, reports say the Frontierland Station has been temporarily closed, and the railroad has been running in shuttle mode between the Main Street, U.S.A. station and the Fantasyland station in Storybook Circus instead of completing the full loop around Magic Kingdom.

When the attraction returns on October 30, it is currently scheduled to operate from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Operating hours can vary with Magic Kingdom’s calendar, especially on dates with early closures for special events.

What it means for your trip

If Magic Kingdom is on your October plan, take the railroad out of your touring strategy. That matters most for families who use it as a slower, seated break between the front of the park and Storybook Circus.

You should also expect a little less low-effort transportation inside Magic Kingdom. The railroad is not usually the fastest way to cross the park, but it is useful when you want to rest, avoid backtracking, or give younger kids a reset without leaving the park.

If you were counting on the train for atmosphere more than transportation, treat it as a missed bonus rather than a day-breaker. Build your Magic Kingdom plan around walking routes instead, especially if you are moving between Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland, and Frontierland during busier parts of the day.
