Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain is a high-speed roller coaster tucked into the Asia section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, themed around a runaway train through the Himalayas guarded by a mythical Yeti. The roughly three-minute ride mixes a lift up the mountain, a surprise stretch of backwards track after you hit a torn-up rail, and a fast plunge back toward the station. It’s the park’s signature thrill coaster — big, smooth, and scenic rather than upside-down or brutal.

Is it worth it?

Worth it for almost everyone tall enough — this is the rare headliner that’s genuinely thrilling without being intense enough to scare off first-time coaster riders. At a 5/5 thrill rating it’s the biggest adrenaline hit at Animal Kingdom, but the drops are more “fast and swooping” than stomach-dropping, and the theming (mountain, Yeti, backwards section) does a lot of the heavy lifting. The standout is that backwards run through the dark interior of the mountain — a genuine surprise the first time. The catch: the marquee Yeti animatronic has spent long stretches in a strobe-lit “disco” mode rather than fully lunging, so temper expectations there and enjoy the coaster on its own terms. Skip only if you don’t do coasters at all, or if backwards motion in the dark triggers motion sickness for you.

• The backwards drop is the whole show — you climb, hit a section of “broken” track, and roll backwards into the dark heart of the mountain before the final plunge. Knowing it’s coming lets you actually enjoy it instead of just bracing.
• Watch for the Yeti on the final outdoor drop toward the station — it’s the ride’s signature reveal, though how animated it is varies, so don’t build the whole ride around it.
• Use the single rider line — this is the money tip for Everest. Because the trains seat in pairs, single rider often moves dramatically faster than standby, and it’s the best free way to beat a long line if your group is willing to split up and ride separately.
• Rope drop or single rider beats paying on most days — Everest is one of the earlier-loading headliners, so an early-morning ride or single rider frequently clears the wait without spending a dime.
• Lightning Lane here is Multi Pass, not Single Pass. At Animal Kingdom the only à-la-carte Single Pass ride is Avatar Flight of Passage — Everest is folded into Multi Pass, the per-day pass where you pick attractions in advance and refill one at a time. If you were mentally budgeting a standalone “Everest skip,” that product doesn’t exist.
• Save it for when standby actually climbs. If the posted wait is short, just walk on or ride single rider; put your Multi Pass selections on rides where the line genuinely won’t budge.

Who can ride

You must be at least 112 cm (about 44 inches) tall to ride, which rules out many younger kids. It’s a fast outdoor coaster with a steep drop and a stretch of backwards travel in the dark, so skip it if you’re sensitive to speed, sudden direction changes, or motion sickness — the backwards-in-the-dark segment is the most likely trigger. There are no inversions and no big airtime hills, so it’s a good “first real coaster” for tweens and nervous adults who meet the height requirement. Rider Switch is available, so a parent can wait with a too-short child and ride without re-queuing.
