Mine Train or Big Thunder First? The Rope Drop Call

Published October 5, 2026 · Updated October 12, 2026

Rope drop Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Not because it’s the better ride — it isn’t — but because it’s the one you can’t fix later without opening your wallet again.

That’s the entire decision, and most planners get it backwards because they rank the two coasters by how much fun they are. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is the better ride: longer, re-rideable, genuinely great at night. Mine Train is roughly three minutes of mild mine-cart swaying with a 38-inch height requirement and the most unforgiving line in the park. Fun ranking is irrelevant at 8:45 AM. What matters is which line you have a second tool for.

The Lightning Lane math is the whole argument

In Magic Kingdom, exactly two attractions sit outside Lightning Lane Multi Pass: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and TRON Lightcycle / Run. Both are Lightning Lane Single Pass — bought à la carte, on their own, in addition to anything else you’ve already paid for. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a Multi Pass attraction, right alongside Peter Pan’s Flight, Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle Cruise, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

So if you bought Multi Pass for the day, you can simply select Big Thunder in advance — Disney resort guests start booking 7 days before arrival, off-site guests 3 days out, with the window opening at 7:00 AM Eastern on your eligible day. Mine Train isn’t in that bundle at any price you’ve already paid.

The practical read: spending your freshest, emptiest 25 minutes of the day on a ride you already hold a return time for is a waste of the best park conditions you’ll get. Burn rope drop on the ride with no safety net.

Early Theme Park Entry tilts it even harder

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is typically on Magic Kingdom’s Early Theme Park Entry roster, along with Space Mountain, Peter Pan’s Flight, the Fantasyland classics, and the PeopleMover. Big Thunder usually is not. Rosters do shift, so glance at the morning’s list before you commit — but the pattern has been stable enough to plan around.

If you’re staying at a Disney hotel and have those extra 30 minutes, the move is almost automatic:

If you don’t have Early Entry, the calculus shifts. You’re arriving into a park where on-site guests have already drained into Fantasyland, which makes Frontierland the cleaner opening. Head left toward Big Thunder, bank a short standby ride, then work Mine Train with a Multi Pass-free strategy later — or decide honestly whether its Single Pass is worth it to you.

The move almost nobody uses: last call

Get in line before the park’s posted closing time and you ride, even if the queue stretches past it. That’s a standing operational reality across Walt Disney World, and it’s why end-of-night queuing is the cheapest skip-the-line trick there is.

For Big Thunder specifically, this is close to a cheat code. The ride is dramatically better in the dark, the final-30-minutes line tends to be a fraction of its afternoon peak, and you’ve spent nothing. Mine Train’s last-call line holds up a bit better than Big Thunder’s because strollers and short-height families cycle through it all evening — but it still usually beats the midday number.

If you only have the energy for one nighttime queue, make it Big Thunder. If you have two, Mine Train second.

Who should actually buy the Mine Train Single Pass

Single Pass earns its keep in a narrow set of cases, and “we want to ride it” isn’t one of them:

And settle the toddler question before you leave the hotel. Mine Train clears a lot of kids at 38 inches who still aren’t emotionally ready for the swinging cars and the final dip. Pull up an on-ride point-of-view video at home and watch your kid’s face. If they tap out, you just saved a purchase and a meltdown at the loading dock. If the group splits, use Rider Switch — nobody has to ride the same thing.

Big Thunder’s bar is a little higher at 40 inches, and the ride itself is faster and jerkier, so it’s not automatically the “easier” family option just because it’s a Multi Pass attraction.

A few Magic Kingdom morning details worth stealing

That last one is exactly what SupaPark is built for. The free tier gives you live waits for both rides, the best-time-to-ride forecaster showing when each one typically bottoms out, and the crowd calendar — so you can see before your trip whether your park day looks like a Mine Train rope drop day or a Big Thunder one. Paid tiers add live alerts that find you: a push the second Big Thunder craters to a walk-on, or the moment a ride goes back up after a hold. SupaPark is free on the web at supapark.com, on iPhone, and on Android, and it only ever alerts — the Lightning Lane and dining bookings themselves still happen in My Disney Experience.

The one thing to remember

Rope drop is for problems you can’t solve any other way. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is solvable — pre-book it on Lightning Lane Multi Pass, or queue it in the last 30 minutes before close when it’s at its best anyway. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train isn’t, unless you pay again. Spend your morning on the ride with no backup plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I rope drop Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Big Thunder Mountain?

Rope drop Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. It’s a Lightning Lane Single Pass ride you can only skip the line on by paying extra, while Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is covered by Lightning Lane Multi Pass and can be booked in advance.

Is Big Thunder Mountain part of Lightning Lane Multi Pass?

Yes. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a Multi Pass attraction, so if you buy Multi Pass for the day you can select it in advance — 7 days before arrival for Disney resort guests, 3 days for off-site guests, with the window opening at 7:00 AM Eastern.

Is Seven Dwarfs Mine Train included in Early Theme Park Entry?

It’s typically on Magic Kingdom’s Early Entry list, which is what makes it the highest-value target in those extra 30 minutes. Big Thunder usually isn’t included, so check the morning’s roster and plan your first move accordingly.

Can I ride Big Thunder Mountain if I get in line right at closing?

Yes — if you’re in the queue by the posted closing time, you get to ride. That makes the final 30 minutes the cheapest way to do Big Thunder, and it’s a better ride in the dark anyway.

Is the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Single Pass worth buying?

It’s worth it mainly for mid-day arrivals, single-day trips, or groups that can’t manage a pre-opening wait. If you have Early Theme Park Entry or plan to be at the gate for rope drop, you can usually skip the purchase entirely.
